Best of 2013 Interview: Sied van Riel

The last 50 weeks have seen Sied van Riel track-blasting his way around the electronic dance universe’s most prominent clubs, arenas and festivals. December 16th will see him transit 2013/2014 through the release ‘Rielism 2’. The follow-up to his much-champed 2011 debut mix-voyage, it’s worthy successor in every right and respect. The second realization of ‘Rielism’ brings a heritage-return to Sied’s best-known-for sound - that of atmospheric, floor-thriving progressive and powerful, cultured trance.

Seamlessly, harmonically and thrillingly mixed to perfection, it includes numerous box-fresh, never-heard-before tracks from some of planet Earth’s most talented electronic musicians. Incoming is music from the artisanal studios of Corsten, Tyas, O’Callaghan and Ottaviani, as well as hot-ticket audio from Aly & Fila, Bobina, Arctic Quest, Protoculture, Sneijder and a dozen + others besides.
With many exclusives from ‘Rielism’s own anchorman, ‘R.2’ has already taxied for take off. So strap yourselves in, ensure your seat is in the upright position and secure any loose objects! Cos things are about to get as Riel as they can get.

Interview was written and conducted by Dimitri Kechagias, Music Journalist, Radio / DJ

Name: Sied van Riel
Location: The Low Lands aka Holland

Dimitri: Can you tell us about your achievements in your music career in 2013 as DJ &/or producer?

Sied van Riel:  I've only released 2 tracks in 2013 and a few remixes because I was focusing on Rielism 2 and a lot of exclusive music for that compilation. Past Present Future on Armada & Adagio For Wings a collab with John O'Callaghan on Subculture Recordings. There's a lot of new music coming though starting December.

Dimitri: If you look back on 2013, are there any events in your music career that you wished you had done differently in order to get a better outcome?

Sied van Riel:  Not really to be honest. I'm happy to have been able to step out of the circle I live in for a while. When you're always traveling or locked up in a studio you hardly get out of your bubble anymore. I decided to go back to basics. Back to what my heart and mind tells me to do. I think people have noticed a big difference in my sets compared to last year and I've enjoyed every single event I got the chance to play at in 2013.

1) Best Track:
Sied van Riel:  This new track from Sean Tyas is an absolute beauty. 'Sean Tyas - Now You See". It will be released in the third week of December on Tytanium Recordings.  Also "Eco - Alonism" is an amazing track. We need more Eco in our lives! And Ram!! His tracks have been in every single set of mine for almost 2 years now. And then there are Alex M.O.R.P.H. and Jorn van Deynhoven pushing out 1 big track after the other.

2) Best Artist (DJ & producer):
Sied van Riel:  You're gonna hear a lot of Sherano I think and also Sneijder have been pushing out 1 massive release after the other. Then there's Bogdan Vix. His solo productions are spot on and he just did a remix for me for the track I did with Chris Jones "Share This Night".

3) Best Remix:
Sied van Riel: Aly & Fila & Susana - Without You (Mohamed Ragab Remix) .. listen to it and you'll know what I mean. And the remix Sneijder did for Veracocha - Carte Blanche. There are a lot more, but it's impossible to name every track.

4) Best Remixer:
Sied van Riel:  ah there are so many good remixers out there.. Protoculture, Thomas Heredia, Rafael Frost, Mohamed Ragab..

 5) Best New Talent (DJ or producer):
Sied van Riel: Sherano and Bogdan Vix. Their tracks just do it for me. Powerful productions every single time.

6) Best Album:
Sied van Riel:  Best album for me would be Aly & Fila's album Quiet Storm. Amazing productions and it really is a story. Extremely well produced. The same goes for Giuseppe Ottaviani's album "Magenta"

 7) Best Compilation:
Sied van Riel:  To be honest I haven't listened to a single compilation this year. Mainly because I was working on Rielism 2 and didn't want to be influenced by how others did theirs. So I'll give you a rain check on this one for next year haha.

 8) Best artwork/cover of an album or compilation:
Sied van Riel:  Lange "We Are Lucky People" Very cool design.

9) Best lyrics:
Sied van Riel:  "Armin van Buuren ft Trevor Guthrie - This Is What It Feels Like" Every time I hear that track It's stuck in my head for days.

10) Best Vocalist/Singer:
Sied van Riel:  Alicia Madison just gave me a couple of vocals… I'm blown away!! And Emma Hewitt is always my favorite!

11) Best Label:
Sied van Riel:  Armada, Black Hole, Enhanced,FSOE, Subculture. and Monster Tunes. Quality releases every single time. Lange recordings has also been spot on this year!

12) Best Music Video:
Sied van Riel:   That's a good one. The only thing I watch on youtube is standup comedy to see some of my friends at work on stage by making people laugh. I did see a few videos of course, but I use youtube to relax when I have a break from the studio or when I'm in my hotel room relaxing. The ones that are always spot on with their videos are Above & Beyond. Amazing work.

13) Best amusing video from Youtube related to Dance Music:
Sied van Riel:  Some of the top100 campaign videos are funny! And of course the stuff from on the road or back stage.

 14) Best Online Social media network:
Sied van Riel:  Twitter and Facebook as usual. Since I ditched my Blackberry and got an Iphone I became more active on both as it's easier to deal with for me now when I'm traveling.

15) Best music composition software:
Sied van Riel:  Logic Pro 9 and Cubase Sx 7

16) Best Event or Open Air Festival:
Sied van Riel:  Stereosonic in Australia, Tomorrowland/world.  Full On events we do world wide and I'm often part of. And obviously A State Of Trance.

17) Best personal DJ Gig:
Sied van Riel:  Wonderland Serbia .. surprise of the year! Omnia and myself.. 5500 people attended the event. They had to change venues because the ticket sales went through the roof. What an unexpected and amazing night that was!

18) Best DJ set  of the year from another DJ?:
Sied van Riel:  There was this warm up dj in Sofia named Borra. It has been years since I last heard a deeper, melodic and bass driven warm up set like that. I honestly was impressed by the guy and I told him this as well. Warming up is an art and he nailed it.

19) Best country in which you have performed:
Sied van Riel: Argentina, Canada, The USA, Australia, Russia, Asia.. so much to choose from. Mexico is always a favorite as well. And the scene here in Holland is really getting better and better again! Quality events and a great crowd. Creamfields in Peru was amazing as well. First time there and these people know how to party for sure!!

20) Best Radio show:
I Sied van Riel:   don't listen to other radio shows that much to be honest. Every now and then I'll tune in to ASOT or GDJB on thursdays, but I'm mainly to busy with producing music and I don't want to be distracted to much again. Sometimes I'll just download the podcast and listen to it when I'm traveling. Even then I'm listening to bands like Nirvana, The Doors, Lenny Kravitz and what not. Also a lot of 80s music that I still enjoy.

21) Best Radio station:
Sied van Riel:  The only stations I tune in every now and again are Afterhours fm and Di.fm so those 2 are my favorites.

22) Best Online Record shop where you usually purchase your music:
Sied van Riel:  Beatport and trackitdown.net

23) Best Website that you visit regularly:
Sied van Riel:  Twitter, Facebook, VK and Youtube.

 24) Best smart phone/mobile/App:
Sied van Riel: KLM, BA and Lufthansa apps haha. I need these for my travels =) Even tho some of them could use some updating, they do come in handy for late check ins or when I forget when I'm supposed to be at an airport. And then of course the twitter and Facebook apps.

25) Best DJ/Producer product (software or hardware
Sied van Riel:  I dj with usb sticks so Rekordbox does it for me. Production software… anything Native Instruments makes. And I'm also a huge Neve and Urei fanatic. The studio I use in Scotland is loaded with vintage outboard gear. I love toys like that haha.

26) Best new sound or sample which has been used in EDM this year, preferably introduced by you?
Sied van Riel:  hmm. I never brag about my own productions or sounds.. I'll let the critics and followers decide in that.  I'm a big fan of huge leads and a lot of layering, which always makes it a bit different then using a standard preset. And bass ..

27) Best Twitter or Facebook message you received from a fan or friend or you have read from someone else:
Sied van Riel:  I read every single one, but don't always reply right away or am not always able to reply. It's heartwarming to see people showing their appreciation on twitter and or Facebook. It really drives and fuels me. And It's always funny and cool how creative some people can be. I love it when they take a picture and transform it in to something really unique and or funny. I've received a few of those years. Or memes.. hilarious.

28) Best piece of News you heard this year related to Electronic Dance Music:
Sied van Riel:  Hmm.. good question. I mainly follow news that comes from the scene I'm active in and that's trance. I'm enjoying the fact that people worldwide are craving trance more then ever. That's a good sign.

29) Best personal achievement
Sied van Riel:  Hmm still being able to do what I love to do. That is hobby-ing in the studio and getting the chance to play sets at events world wide every week. That is unique and an achievement realized by promoters, the people out there that support me. That to me beats any physical acknowledgement out there that you could maybe win or get for what you do or have done. Everything is temporarily so again.. living the life I live now is just one big achievement and I hope it continues for years to come. I'll do my best and the rest is up to everybody out there =)

 30) Best holiday destination or best hobby or activity that you spent some time in during 2013.
Sied van Riel: I didn't go on a holiday for 6 years… but I do enjoy a good walk in the forest with my dogs or playing a few games of bowling when I can. Or just spending time with friends when I have free time.

31) Best piece of advice you got in relation to your career:
Sied van Riel:  Stop listening to others and do what your mind and heart tell you you want to do.  I went straight back to the core of what I stand for. Trance!

32) The Best Book this year, preferably related to trance:
Sied van Riel: The only thing I've read this year that was on paper where my itineraries and the TV guide. So I can't really answer this question. The last book I read was Andre Agassi's Bio.

 33) Best Movie of the year preferably related to trance or inspired you to compose a track.
Sied van Riel:   Non really, but I watched "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" 4 times on my trip to Buenos Aires in August. Twice each way haha. Love it! And I am waiting till Anchorman 2 hits movie theaters. Been dying to see that one.

34) Best tip that you learnt this year relating to DJ’ing or music composition.
Sied van Riel: I've learned a few good pointers from Ferry Corsten when we were in Ibiza and had our geek moment during dinner. Everybody has their own way of producing music, but my motto in life is that you can learn new things every single day and should always be open to this. There's still so much I can learn when it comes to life and producing music, but then again certain things could also limit your creativity. If it sounds good it sounds good.

Dimitri: 2014 is ahead of us; would you like to tell us your plans for future releases, tracks, albums, collaborations or DJ gigs.

Sied van Riel:  Well obviously there's Rielism 2 with a lot of new productions and collaborations. I've also signed a track to FSOE Recordings that I made with Bjorn Akesson. Currently working on a new vocal track. This vocal blew me away when I got it. A vocalist from New York send it to me and I was like .. gimme gimme gimme!! Also remixing her at the moment. Then I redid the original of 8 Decades and added a vocal from Adina Butar on it. Sooo happy with the results of that! Also remixing a few more tracks for Armada and working on own banging trance releases. There's a lot lined up already and I couldn't be more excited for 2014 honestly. After laying low for a year I am eager to gets things out there.

Dimitri: Thanks very much for for taking the time to reply to this interview

Sied van Riel:  Thanks a lot for doing this with me!

Thanks very much to Geertje Hermans at Black Hole Recordings press office  for her support to organise this interview
