Best of 2012: Arrakeen from Singapore
Name: Arrakeen
Location: Singapore

Dimitri: Can you tell us how 2012 has been for the development of your career as a DJ and/or Producer?

Arrakeen: I’ve gotta say it’s been coming along pretty alright so far! As a producer, I’m beginning to receive the exposure resulting from the hard work I’ve been putting in to find and create my own signature sound… I had an early year remix project in February with Camouflage, and was approached by several other labels for remix projects which I had to unfortunately turn down, due to time constraints and balancing producing and work life… It wasn’t completely stagnant of course; so on the up side, I do have two truly great releases coming out early 2013 on the always awesome Camouflage, so I do hope my fans will lend their support and stay tuned! These are really gonna be something… I’m really excited about the upcoming year!

Dimitri: Can you tell us how 2012 has been for the development of your career as a DJ and/or Producer?

Simon Lee & Alvin: 2012 has been a huge year for us! It’s our 5th year of Radio KUL and we’re so happy with the continued support from 1 Mix Radio! We’ve been able to feature so many amazing EDM artistes on the show – it’s so great to have them share their music and experiences with the listeners – most notably Molly Bancroft, Madelin Zero, and the many guest DJ sets that we’ve featured. We also celebrated our 200th episode this year – thanks to singers Hadley and Cristina Soto for hosting those special editions! And we mixed Radio KUL Vol. 02 that went to #32 on the Beatport Mixes chart.
Personally as DJs, we finished our debut single “Count The Stars” that just got released on the legendary Black Hole Recordings. I think that was the most important thing we did this year - just spending plenty of time in the studio finishing a lot of music and edits that we can use in our radio shows and performances.
We played some really great gigs this year too - some small, some bigger. And we won a local dance music award (Choons Award) for our radio show.
So yes, we cannot ask for more and it’s been so humbling to have all this success in 2012.
It will be very hard to top this year!

Best of 2012: Harmonic Agenda

Best of 2012: John SHarmonic Agendavartberg
Name: John Svartberg - alias: Harmonic Agenda.
Location: Stockholm, Sweden

Dimitri: Can you tell us how 2012 has been for the development of your career as a DJ and/or Producer?
Harmonic Agenda: 2012 has been a Great year for me, both as a person and in my musical career. In early spring this year, my beautiful daughter was born. She is my firstborn child, and it has been an amazing journey so far. Being a dad is life changing, and I love every bit of it. She gives me so much inspiration every day.
Since being a parent takes up a lot of time, my focus hasn’t been put into my music this year. But I’ve had a few releases, and two of them are really special to me.
Drylight - Tin Box (Harmonic Agenda Remix), has a very unique sound coming from me. It is not Trance.. it is not Pop.. it is an electronic mixture of my feelings that I managed to capture during my girlfriend’s pregnancy. It means a lot to me.
Harmonic Agenda - Philly Fox (Original Mix), is a milestone in my early career. This is my first original track, released on Nemesis (Subtraxx). I managed to express exactly what Harmonic Agenda means to me - progressive beats, with lots of percussion, tension pads, harmonic leads, deep cutting saw basses and funky plucks. I am really proud to have this tune in my line-up.

We have been released more than 15 singles and EPs as well as compilations in which our tracks were included. Our main achievement in 2012 was signing to Armada and Black Hole. That makes us really happy, and as a result our gig schedule has increased and we’ve started to get more orders for remixes and that’s great too.

Dimitri: If you look back at 2012, are there any moments in your musical career that you wish you had done differently in order to get a better outcome?

Iversoon & Alex Daf: We are pretty happy with what is happening now, and how 2012 has turned out for Iversoon & Alex Daf. We consider this year to be full of new experiences and achievements in a producer's aspect. Of course, we have experienced a lot of difficulties, but everyone has them eventually. We are looking for a good booking manager at the moment.

So far, things have been great. We have made a lot of progress during the last year. I’m sure 2013 will be even better!

will.i.am - Scream & Shout ft. Britney Spears
Esteemed Dutch Production Duo Lazy Jay Produces New #1 Single with Will.I.Am and Britney Spears.
Toon and Jef Martens, known collectively as Lazy Jay, may add two new superstars to their impressive repertoire. Former Black Eyed Peas alum Will.I.Am and pop star turned X-Factor judge, Britney Spears. In a phone call straight out of a Hollywood film, Will.I.Am cold called a stunned Jef at his home studio in Holland and asked the duo to provide the beats for his latest track with Britney Spears “Scream & Shout.” “I mostly work till late in our studio and when my phone rang at 3 in the morning, I answered and heard: “Hello, it’s Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas, how are you?” – I was speechless of course. He explained that he listened to some of our music and wanted to use one of our beats for his single with Britney Spears. Before we knew, we were on a plane to Los Angeles to record the track with Will and Britney!” –Jef Martens

S O L A R S T O N E pres. Pure Trance – The Album Mixed by Solarstone + Orkidea
On October 18th, dockside @ Undercurrent in Amsterdam - during the peak of ADE’s annual takeover - dance pioneer Solarstone showcased his new audio axiom. In the packed-to-capacity club, with anticipation sky high, those lucky enough to have a begged, borrowed or bought a ticket were among the first to experience Pure Trance.
With that opening shot fired, the movement is ready to go global. Alongside fellow forerunner Orkidea, Solarstone has encapsulated this vision in mix-comp form. Featuring 25 exclusive tracks, built from propellant beats, tremor-inducing LFO, iridescent melodies, sky-bound synths and heartfelt vocals, trance will be revised to its purest degree.
“This isn’t about looking back. It’s about stepping forward. It’s not about trance’s history or genealogy. It’s about stripping away the music’s unwarranted add-ons; restoring trance’s most vibrant and essential elements and making the genre we love timeless.” - Solarstone

Armin van Buuren back to number one in DJ Mag Top 100!

Armin van Buuren back to number one in DJ Mag Top 100! He’s back. He’s done it again. Armin van Buuren has been voted number one DJ in the DJ Mag Top 100 of 2012, making it an historic fifth time as the world’s most popular DJ! We’d like to congratulate Armin with this incredible feat, and thank each and every one of you for your continuous support! Last night, at the DJ Mag Awards Show at the Convention Center in Amsterdam, Armin was awarded for number one DJ, as a reward for his hard work and endless passion for music. In 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010, he won the critically acclaimed popularity poll, until David Guetta took over in 2011.
This year, Armin won back the number 1 title, the crown to his accomplishments. Armin:”Dance Music for me is all about sharing. I’d like to share my passion for this kind of music and to get so much recognition from the fans is simply amazing. Even the words ‘thank you’ don’t express my gratitude. I’m overwhelmed… I’d like to dedicate this award to my family and fans. Without you I would be nowhere.” Hot off a busy summer season that included his own weekly night in Ibiza’s Privilege, Armin is now fully focussing on the celebration of the 600th episode of his radio show A State of Trance. Solarstone - Pure Trance

Solarstone - Pure Trance
Solarstone - Pure Trance. Since it was conceived in the basement clubs and backstreet studios of Berlin in ’93 and propelled overground in ‘98, trance has twisted, transformed and mutated in a hundred different directions. This year Solarstone - one of its foremost draughtsmen – has initiated a roots return for the genre. A rally against inorganic and trend-driven Trance, his is a rediscovery or what first drew so many to the genre’s flame. For those more interested in what’s good, rather than what’s ‘the latest’, all your wishes are about to come true…
The reclamation has started! Behold Pure trance!

Back in May, under the #PureTrance hashtag, Solarstone cast ‘The Spell’. The track was a return to keynote trance production, its rhythmic, fluid arrangement, air-cutting synths and angelic vocals striking an immediate chord. Taken from the tracklist of his allied album ‘Pure’, ‘Fireisland’ and ‘Falcons’ (co-produced alongside fellow Purists Aly & Fila and Giuseppe Ottaviani respectively) exponentially fanned the flames of Pure Trance. Suddenly a mild undercurrent was turning into a major groundswell; boots were on the ground, the campaign was gathering momentum and the heads of the genre’s most switched-on were turning.

Full On will be officially launched in the Dutch capital’s newest event location associated with the ADE, Undercurrent, in the presence of music industry professionals, fans and media.
Full On is the next level of the Full On Ferry concept that was launched together with UDC at Ahoy Rotterdam in 2007. After triumphant editions at Ahoy and other locations all over the world, the tried and tested concept will now officially be continued as Full On - Hosted by Ferry Corsten. With the ADE event Flashback at Paradiso (2010) and the sold out Ferry Corsten & Sander van Doorn ADE Special at Escape (2011) on Corsten’s resume, it is Undercurrent that got elected for the introduction of Full On. The remarkable premises located in the north of Amsterdam is a true eye catcher, floating on the river IJ, next to the creative NDSM grounds with an impressive view on the centre of Amsterdam.

Enhanced Progressive 100 - Mixed by Juventa & Eximinds

Enhanced Progressive 100 - Mixed by Juventa & Eximinds
Enhanced Progressive 100 - Mixed by Juventa & Eximinds - Released 17th September. Last year Enhanced Recordings hit the landmark 100th release, and this September the Enhanced Progressivelabel will achieve the same feat.  What better way to reach the milestone than to celebrate the best of the past, present and future of thelabel that has carved out its own brand of progressive trance, making it anindustry favourite along the way and the perfect accompaniment to the Enhanced Recordings label in delivering the deeper side of trance, and always with that signature melodic and quality sound associated with Enhanced.

A label responsible for discovering talents such as Arty, the back catalogue is packed with modern anthems which have been delivered since the label’s inception in 2005, as the label continues to unearth celebrated talent. Two artists at the current forefront of the progressive sound and lighting up the label with their productions are the outlandishly talented Juventa and Eximinds, so who better to compile and mix this celebratory release than these artists who represent the sound and ethos of the label, and the future of the genre.

Interview with Jordy Dazz

Interview: Jordy Dazz talks about his name-change, his passion and upcoming releases.
Interview: Jordy Dazz talks about his name-change, his passion and upcoming releases.

First of all, thank you for your time!
You’ve changed your artist name a few months ago from Jordy Lishious to Jordy Dazz. Can you tell us about that?

I started out DJing when I was about 14 years old. When I got more and more gigs, I wanted to add an artist name to my performances, which became Jordy Lishious. At that time it was more a name for fun and I didn’t really think it through. But the last 2 years I noticed I was struggling with the name and decided, end of 2011, that I wanted a name that suited me better. I also slightly started changing my sound, so it was the right moment to switch it up. After a few weeks of brainstorming, I thought Jordy Dazz was the perfect name for the new path I was going! It’s been one of the best decisions so far.

The evolution of EVOLUTION by Paul van Dyk

EVOLUTION – The Extended Versions, Out Through Beatport Mid-July.
The evolution of EVOLUTION by Paul van Dyk. Having just completed his sixth long-player Paul van Dyk spent much of a subsequent flight to the States writing and reflecting on the album making process. Sharing background and anecdotes on how the various productions and vocal collaborations came into existence, here, track-by-track, is the result. Its one that provides the definitive insight into the creation of an album called EVOLUTION.

‘Symmetries’ feat. Austin Leeds
“At the start of ‘Evolution’s production I assembled this hybrid studio set-up which I could take into clubs. Through keyboards and effects boxes, it allowed me to work pretty much any type of new element you can imagine into a track. I’m not sure if clubbers realized it at the time, but they were essentially interacting with the music making process of ‘Evolution’. Their reactions were showing me which direction each of the tracks should take. Austin started ‘Symmetries’ by producing this piece that had the drums, percussion loops and bassline and sent me this wonderful backing track. I had a piano hook line in my head and in the club I started playing it over the top. This was the first time that the two parts came together and the track we arrived with at the end became ‘Symmetries’.”

Richard Durand - In Search of Sunrise 10: Australia

Richard Durand - In Search of Sunrise 10: Australia
Richard Durand - In Search of Sunrise 10: Australia Having EDM-profiled South Africa in 2010 and India in ‘11, Richard Durand – globe-circling deck-master extraordinaire – is closing in fast on his third Sunrise. There can be few better places to find it than the land where the sun comes up first: Australia. Given unprecedented access to the future anthems vault of Black Hole Records, and a dozen other labels besides, Richard has compiled and mixed the best of their best into two new entrancing ISOS mixes – ones that will propel you headlong into summer 2012! ‘Australia’ represents the 10th edition of the series and to honour that occasion, Richard has conceived a very unique twist, just for this album!
“Australia is a country I’ve wanted to locate an ISOS, ever since I took over mixing of the series”, says Richard. “It’s dance music history stretches right the way back to the start of the 90s. However it’s only in the last 3 years that I’ve felt the type of music I spin has gone supernova there. So I’m thrilled that I get to pay dues to that here, with what I think is a new level high for music on the series.”
