Winter Vandit Nights 2013 With Paul Van Dyk @ Kesselhaus, Kulturbrauerei, Berlin - 14.12.2013. In season-honoured tradition, going back half a decade or more, this December 14th Paul van Dyk will begin his final countdown to Christmas with another bravura performance on his home-turf of Berlin. In the comfortably customary setting of the German capital’s über-fine Kesselhaus Culture Brewery, he’ll be celebrating another year of VANDIT Records sounds, sights and experiences. Helping to heat those undoubtedly chilly streets will be fellow knights of the Winter Night Arnej and Alex M.O.R.P.H.  Giving yet greater cause for festivity, the event will also play host to the release party for the new PvD-mixed ‘VONYC Sessions: 2013’ compilation.

On December 14th all roads lead to Berlin and to the doors of Kesselhaus… Get there by any means necessary!

The fridge is starting to bulge, the tree is just about standing straight and it’s getting dark right after lunch. It can mean but just one thing… Christmas is coming up fast! There’s always one more weekend for some proper kinetic club-side action before you hang up your clubbing shoes (and stockings!) for the holidays though. Inside that time he completed production on his long awaited,corner-turning sixth album, which in turn unlocked a new trove of PvD music. These he’s used to power his extraordinary globe-spanning EVOLUTION stage performances and, of course, his now iconic radio show, VONYC Sessions.

This December van Dyk will leave his final musical mark on the year, with the release of the fourth instalment of the radio broadcast’s mix annual. Featuring the cream of the audio it championed over the last 12 months, it includes tracks from Cosmic Gate, Orjan Nilsen, Tritonal, Judge Jules and of course much from the master himself… This is the year that was. Having just completed his sixth long-player Paul van Dyk spent much of a subsequent flight to the States writing and reflecting on the album making process. Sharing background and anecdotes on how the various productions and vocal collaborations came into existence, here, track-by-track, is the result. Its one that provides the definitive insight into the creation of an album called EVOLUTION.

“At the start of ‘Evolution’s production I assembled this hybrid studio set-up which I could take into clubs. Through keyboards and effects boxes, it allowed me to work pretty much any type of new element you can imagine into a track. I’m not sure if clubbers realized it at the time, but they were essentially interacting with the music making process of ‘Evolution’. Their reactions were showing me which direction each of the tracks should take. Austin started ‘Symmetries’ by producing this piece that had the drums, percussion loops and bassline and sent me this wonderful backing track. I had a piano hook line in my head and in the club I started playing it over the top. This was the first time that the two parts came together and the track we arrived with at the end became ‘Symmetries’.”

Paul van Dyk - Evolution - "Evolution' isn't about feeding the machine", says Paul. "I started to record it when I felt the time was right and that was perhaps not the same as when the industry expected it. When I began to work on the album, there was no deadline and no predetermined musical remit. No managers saying, 'you need to work with this person/that person'. What came, came, and I found using this process exhilarating. Given the method, the fact that 'Evolution's jigsaw has all slotted into place so well is the ultimate satisfaction for me."

As far back as The Visions of Shiva, van Dyk's belief in the dynamic of the studio collaboration hasn't wavered. On 'Evolution' though he takes this to an entirely new level. Regular PvD watchers will likely already be onside with many of the artists accompanying him on its tracklist. They are performers spotlighted by Paul on a regular basis, either in-club, on his radio show, or both, who all, in their way, bring evolutionary aspects to his sixth studio-based album.
