Here are Alex Wright's top 5 Trance Encounters ahead of his first show on 1Mix Radio which begins at 20:00 - 21:00 GMT New Year's Day! This month's reviews include a special Christmas give-away from Mark Sherry's 'Outburst' label, a dark progressive trancer from Poland's Jackob Rocksonn, and quality Tech Trance from Liam Wilson as well as uplifting goodness from Enhanced Music.
Aimoon - Freedom out on Always Alive / Enhanced Music
Released on Daniel Kandi's Always Alive Recordings this month, Aimoon has come back with a brilliant track that makes great use of driving percussion, energetic basslines and an instantly recognisable vocal sample that euphorically chants "Follow freedom." This is proper stuff that takes me back to classic Anjuna days when Above & Beyond would play techy material from the likes of Bart Claessen, Mark Pledger and Vardran in their sets, as well as a lot of the music associated with Gatecrasher. This is pure Trance in my opinion with an excellent melody, the lazer-tinged bass drop before the climax is a nice touch too.
Jackob Rocksonn - Oblivion out on Destination Sunshine / Redux recordings
The amtosphere created by Kuba in this moody monster is something I adore very much, with excellent chords stabs and cold, industrial textures playing alongside looming basslines and hypnotic arpeggiated melodies. The breakdown is downright dark and menacing, and the drop which follows is brilliant too. I consider this as a big step up in the sonic quality of his productions, and I expect great things from Jackob in the near future after hearing this.
Jamie Walker - Dynamism out on Outburst records as free give away
Since having the pleasure of experiencing an Outburst event at last month's Trance Sanctuary, I jumped at the chance of downloading five new exclusive free tracks from their Facebook page this week. All of the tracks cover the full range of the Outburst Tech Trance sound, however this one tickled my fancy that little bit more due to its massive saw riffs and driving percussion that I really am a sucker for. Again this one takes me back to the oldskool vibe I love, with pulsing basslines and relentless techy percussion. The drop is killer, and even better when notched up a few BPM! ;)
Liam Wilson - 166 out on Damaged records
Forthcoming on Jordan Suckley's new Damaged compilation, Liam Wilson's latest shows that he is an unstoppable force in the world of Trance, continuously churning out quality production after quality production. I was directed to a Soundcloud preview of this the other day and was simply blown away by it. The tightness of Liam's mixdowns is something to be rewarded in itself, with the low end kicking some serious ass in the intro. Soon enough, the breakdown hits with heavenly vocals, chord melodies and tasty supersaw riffs that quite literally take you up to heaven. The buildup then ensues into a crazy Tech drop with excellent sound design and an unexpected triplet section eight bars in that would do some serious damage in a club. I highly rate Liam Wilson as a producer as he continuously proves that he can do pretty much anything. '166' will be released on Monday 18th December.
Rafael Osmo & Linnea Schossow - Retro Machine out on Digital Society / Enhanced Music
Linnea Schossow teams up with Rafael Osmo for this excellent uplifter released on Digital Society Recordings, providing her heavenly vocals amongst a backdrop of gorgeous pads and classic sounding plucks. This track is full of positivity and euphoria, and if it doesn't put a smile on your face I'm not sure what will!
